Corn Festival and Ballet

A corn festival was in full swing, drawing folks from all over to meet in the center of town. They were gathered to eat golden kernels on the cob, drink melted snow cones, and watch people of all ages perform talents on stage. Phoebe pulled Lola toward the stage, eager to watch the show.

A group of brown and purple belts kicked and yelled in their karate robes. Another group, this one containing a mass of tumblers, flipped in midair. There was even a band that played sting instruments and a lady who sang a wonderful ballad. When the performers were finished, Phoebe did a front roll on the warm pavement and attempted a cartwheel in an effortt to be more like the big kids she had observed. There was one group, however, that got Phoebe’s attention the most; the dancing ballerinas.

She loved them so much, in fact, that she signed up for summer classes. “Tutu Fun” was the name of the class and boy was it fun! Not only did Phoebe get to don a new leotard with a tulle skirt, she even insisted on wearing leg warmers over her slippers – even though the heat index was rising high.

First, they warmed up with butterfly stretches and neck rolls. Next, the students traveled one-by-one across the floor; they marched and kicked and even hopped like a frog. Phoebe was the greatest listener and followed all instructions the best that she could. Before class was over, she imagined herself as a Prima Ballerina, leaping and spinning on stage in front of adoring crowds.

When it was time for “free dance,” Lola watched as her sister twirled and wriggled around the room with a scarf in her hand. As the music played, Phoebe moved her body. She swirled and twirled in a pirouette, she bent at the knees to plié, she lifted on to her toes to relevé. She felt graceful and strong.

When she was done, Phoebe took a bow and was rewarded with a sticker.

“Look, Lola,” she boasted, “I was the best in the class!”

And Lola agreed.

Take Good Care (at the Public Library)

Take Good Care (at the Public Library)

Toward the end of spring, just as summer was knocking on the door, Phoebe and Lola were stuck inside during yet another rainy day. It was thought best by everyone to take the first opportunity, once the clouds held off their downpour long enough, to get out of the house.Seeing as how the girl’s reading material had been used up and repeated over the last few days, the decision was made to head to the library.

First, Phoebe lead Lola into the reading room where a new teacher read them a book about opposites. They learned about little and big, about many and few. They listened quietly and said “Thank you” when they were done.

Next, Lola followed Phoebe into the children’s section of the library.

“Shhh,” Phoebe said to Lola. “We have to use our inside voices!”

Lola giggled, keeping pace with her sister as they went. When they got there, Phoebe was so excited to see so many fun books to read. She began to pull all the books she wanted to bring home from the shelf, piling them as high as she could reach.

“We can’t check out all of the books from the Library,” Phoebe and Lola’s mom said. “We have to leave some for the other children.”

“But, I want to read them all!” Phoebe exclaimed for she always wants to learn more and more.

“I know you do,” her mother said, “and one day you will. You’ll read and read and read them all up. But, for now, let’s just pick out one for every day this week.”

“That makes seven!” Phoebe told Lola. “We can pick seven books.”

So, she made her pile smaller and when they checked out at the courtesy desk, Phoebe used her very own library card.

“You take care,” the lady behind the counter said.

“Take care of the books?” asked Phoebe.

“Yes,” she replied, “and take care of your minds!”

So the girls put their books in the book bag, and went home to read.

Love, Phoebe and Lola

A Day at the Zoo

A Day at the Zoo

“Lola, Lola!” Phoebe hollered at her sister one beautiful spring morning. “Wake up, Lola. We are going to the zoo!”

Phoebe was especially eager on this particular day because she had been waiting to see one specific animal for quite some time. Ever since she borrowed a book at the public library about Zebras, she had been dreaming in black and white stripes. Now, the day had finally come to see one in person.

After a healthy breakfast and a long drive - during which Phoebe tried her best to be patient - they were finally at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

“Let’s go this way,” Phoebe pulled the little red wagon to the right in hopes of finding her braying friends.

“Look, Lola,” she said, pointing to a cream colored cat with a long mane. “That is a Lion. It says Roar!”
Lola giggled when the King of the zoo responded with a lazy yawn.

“And here! Lola, look at the big elephant,” Phoebe led her to the large, grey pachyderm. “Oh, I can’t wait to see the Zebra!”

The day was full of laughter and joy, no one could deny it. The two little girls found the giraffe and Phoebe told Lola how it looked like a tall patch-work quilt.

Then they watched the monkeys swing from branch to branch and the polar bear dive deep below the water. They even danced with a flamboyance of flamingos!

By the time they reached what Phoebe thought was the last enclosure – one that held a very round baby hippopotamus and its mother – it was time to leave the zoo. Phoebe still had not seen the animal she had been so eager to meet, the zebra.

She began to pout in defeat when she heard Lola make a joyful cry. When Phoebe turned around to see what made her little sister so enthusiastic, she saw them – the pen full of zebras.

“Thank you, Lola,” she said, dancing on her toes. “You are the best little sister.”

And Lola smiled.

The Fist day of Spring

When Phoebe awoke on the first day of spring, what she wanted to do the most was take Lola outside to play. But, when she peered into the bassinette, she didn’t find a happy baby. Phoebe’s little sister was crying. Before they could go out for a new adventure, Lola needed to turn that frown upside down.

“When I’m sad,” Phoebe said, “I like to sing a song.” So Phoebe sung the tune she loved the most with an “E-I-E-I-Oh,” doing her best to stay on key. But, Lola could not sing.

“Maybe I will read her my favorite book,” She thought and ran to the shelf to retrieve the little white hardback with the polar bear on the front. Yet, even though she did her best to say all of the words right and make all the appropriate animal noises, Lola continued to weep.

Finally, she remembered that when nothing else helped, Phoebe snuggled with her teddy bear and it always made her feel better. So she retrieved her toy and brought it to the bassinette. Strangely, her trusty bear had no effect on little Lola.

It was at that moment when an idea came to mind.

“Lola needs her own teddy,” She decided. But, where to get one?
She tore through the toy chest in search for a new bear with no luck. She did, however, find an old sweater, some stuffing and a couple of buttons.

“If I glue this together and put sew the buttons here…” she rambled on as she got to work. She used a needle and thread (with some help from her mom) and put it all together. Last, but not least, she pulled a heart shaped stamp out of her craft box and marked the little stuffed toy with love. Proudly, Phoebe presented her sister with her very own stuffed bear.

The moment Lola snuggled next to the toy, her tears dried up and a smile spread across her face.

“Are you ready to go out into the sunshine now?” She asked the beaming face looking up at her. Her response was an affirming giggle of joy. At last, the adventure could begin.

There is this little girl I know who is adventurous and brave. She loves to explore and learn but was feeling awful lonely having to discover new things all by herself. Until, one day, the greatest thing happened; the biggest adventure of all. This little girl – Phoebe is her name – became a big sister.

Lola was born with her eyes wide open. She has a hunger for the world, just like her big sister. You can see it in the back of her baby blues. She may not walk or talk just yet. But, when she observes the world around her, one thing is for sure, she is making plans.

So, Phoebe decided that Lola would make a perfect partner and together they see the world.
